Grumpy Donuts

You know when you want to go to a really popular concert, so when you're buying your ticket you have to impatiently wait at your computer for the clock to strike the time they go on sale? And when it does, your mind and body goes on autopilot, filling in information blanks at military precision. One wrong move and you’ll be left with nothing. This is what it’s like to order from Grumpy Donuts. The first time I tried to order their doughnuts online, their orders opened at 5pm and I was a bit late and ended up submitting my order at 5:15pm. I thought I had made it, until I received an email from them saying that they had sold out. I couldn’t believe it. Second time round, there was no fooling about. It hit 5pm and I methodically filled in my details with lightning speed and pressed submit in less than 3 minutes. I waited with shaking hands for the confirmation email and yes, success! My doughnuts were on the way!

Grumpy Donuts is owned by Elise and Scott, who travelled along America experiencing American style doughnuts. They came back to Aus and spent 8 months trying to recreate what they had on their travels, both still holding on to full time jobs. To order their doughnuts, you wait for them to announce the next date and time they will be taking orders (usually every month or so) and when that day arrives it's all about first in, best dressed. If you are successful, you will be sent a confirmation email with the date and time of your doughnut delivery. Their doughnuts are $5-$6 each, plus extra for them to deliver it to you. If you're unable to order online, they also stock their doughnuts in cafes around Sydney, such as The Wedge Espresso and Orto Trading Co., on particular days.

S'mores

The s’mores one looked incredibly enticing, with its torched marshmallow fluff. As a result, it was the first one I tried. Biting into it, the dough itself was denser than expected but still quite soft. It was wonderfully buttery with a slight sweetness, making it a great carrier for this array of toppings. The marshmallow fluff was unbelievably gooey and sweet, which went well with the rich chocolate icing. The graham crackers gave a nice crunch.

Maple bacon bar

When you tapped on the bacon atop the maple bacon bar, it remained beautifully caramelized and crisp. There was just the right amount of the maple bacon icing spread on top, making it perfectly sweet. This was complemented by the charred bacon that added a subtly salty and smoky flavour.

Buttered toast

The buttered toast was one of my favourites as it had interesting flavours. It had brown butter icing and toasted brioche crumbs sprinkled on top, and the icing was luxuriously creamy and rich with a nutty taste in the background.

Blueberry crunch

The blueberry crunch doughnut was the colour of childhood. Bright purple with bits of cereal on top that looked like the ones you would have in your bowl before school. It gave a nice fruity flavour that reminded Angela of a blueberry Kelloggs bar.

Original glaze

The original glaze was lightly coated with a glaze speckled with vanilla pods. It was delicately sweet and there was just the right amount of glaze that let you appreciate both the icing and the doughnut itself.

Choc oreo peanut butter

The choc oreo peanut butter delivered everything it promised. There was a perfect balance between chocolate and peanut butter, and the oreos were delightfully soft and crumbly.

Oreo vanilla ring

The oreo vanilla ring had a thin coating of vanilla icing and a nice little mound of crushed up oreos. Simple and tasty.

 Maple brown sugar

The maple brown sugar doughnut was another one of my favourites. Looking at it, it looked really simple. However, it provided a deep and complex maple syrup flavour that played very well with the doughnut. The ratio between the two was brilliant.

Sour patch jam

Unfortunately, I have some bad news - someone ate my sour patch jam doughnut without telling me, so I was unable to completely taste it. I am not sure if this was a blessing or a curse as I have eaten way too many doughnuts for the last few days. However, I do remember that while we were moving these doughnuts around I got some of the sour patch jam on my hand and licked it off. It was wonderfully sour, just like it promised.

Peanut butter pretzel

I haven't had pretzels in such a long time, so I took off a bit of pretzel and it was so nicely golden, salty and crunchy. This, with the peanut butter and dulce de leche drizzle, gave you the desired peanut butter hit and the ultimate over-the-top American experience.

Caramel potato chips

The caramel potato chips was also another one I particularly enjoyed. The crushed Ruffles potato chips on top became soft by the time I got to try it, but that didn't take away from how well it went with the salted caramel icing. Very yummy.

Raspberry lime

The raspberry lime grumpy with handmade sprinkles tasted exactly like a frozen raspberry coke slushie. Whether you think that is a good or bad thing is up to you!

There it is readers. I have tried all 12 flavours (well, technically 11) of the Grumpy Donuts for you. People may say crazy, but I say it is more of a duty. A duty to good food that's been made with absolute love. Follow these guys on Instagram or Facebook and as soon as they announce their next delivery dates, do not wait for a second! Good luck and enjoy these bad boys.
