Doughbox Diner, Enmore

If there was an eatery that could perfectly suit my friend, Andrea, and I, it would be Doughbox Diner. For Andrea, there is a well executed 1950s theme, from the red vinyl booths and waitresses in hot pink uniforms to the authentic music playing in the background. I love the theme also but what makes me absolutely adore this place is the spin on the classic 1950s menu with their signature hand-held crepe cones.

Doughbox Diner is run by George and Fiona. George is seen in the kitchen, cooking up the crepes. He's had years of experience in the kitchen with him running his own creperie in Athens before he opened up Doughbox in Enmore in 2011. Fiona is the head waitress at the front, in her signature pink uniform and flawless make up. On this visit (which is my third), I am accompanied by one of my regular lunching companions, Vivian.

After we've gone up to the counter to order our thickshakes and crepes, we were given complimentary popcorn and iced water. It tasted freshly popped, buttery and delectably salty. Vivian and I finished this quickly as we were incredibly hungry and it was very moreish.

Milky Way thickshake - $8.50

My go-to items at Doughbox are a thickshake and a crepe. This time I went with their Milky Way thickshake which uses their signature Stairway to Heaven ice cream as the base. The Stairway to Heaven flavour is white chocolate, caramel fudge and chocolate chips. I also asked to add a dollop of malt to my shake, which was an extra 50c. Coming to the table, I loved the swirl of whipped cream and colourful array of sprinkles atop. The shake was sweet, lusciously creamy and the little bits of choc chips added a nice and surprising texture.

Vegie Patch - $12.00

Vivian, being a vegetarian, chose the Vegie Patch crepe and added haloumi cheese for an extra $1.50. The crepe had fresh tomato, spring onion, mushrooms, roasted capsicum, olives, avocado, cheese and the extra haloumi cheese. Vivian said the vegetables were well cooked and that the haloumi cheese was a very good decision as it was the star of the crepe.

Classic burgercone - $13.00

The burgercones were a new addition since the last time I visited so I was keen to try it. The classic burgercone crepe was filled with a beef patty, fresh onion, lettuce, tomato, pickle relish, ketchup, mustard and Jack cheese. All the ingredients were fresh and had a bite to them. The beef patty was a tad dry, and possibly needed more spices. However, that was quickly resolved by the melted cheese on top and the ketchup and mustard combo. I also noticed that all the savoury crepe cones had an outer layer of crispy cheese on the outside, which made the crepes even more crispy and added a dimension of flavour.

Vivian and I finished our crepe cones and ordered one for Sharon, who we were meeting later on. We asked for this one to be put in a takeaway box, which they did kindly and in style with their own little box. You can also take away sundaes and a lot of their other dishes on the menu.

Kofte - $13.00

Sharon chose the Kofte crepe, which was filled with a grilled lamb kofte, fresh tomato, onion, tzaziki, paprika, lemon and cheese. Sharon said the crepe holding everything inside was really good, the tzaziki a delicious addition. She did find the kofte a bit dry and too thick though.

This place is seriously one of my favourite places to go to, and I tell everyone about it because it's just so fun while also delivering good food. If you don’t feel like a crepe cone, try their hotdogs or waffles! They have a lot more on the menu to offer. It's also really close to Enmore Theatre, which is why you'll find many concert-goers coming here before or after their show. If you think it's too packed to get a seat, just get some takeaway!
